Discussion of Ray County Yoakums, 1850
The census records suggest that all these families are related. All (except for Jesse) were born in Tennessee and it is apparent from their childrens' birthdates that they all moved to Missouri around 1835.
Harold Yoakum (Yoakum Family History, 1987, pgs. 13-17) lists all these Yoakums (except Jesse) as children of Isaac Yoakum, born February 23, 1778 at Muddy Creek, Greenbrier County, Virginia. He suggests that Jesse Yoakum is Isaac's brother.
Isaac Yoakum (1778) was the son of George Yoakum I , b. January 15, 1752 and Margaret Van Bebber. The Yoakums and Van Bebbers had very close family ties, and several Van Bebbers moved to Missouri with this branch of the Yoakum family.
Harold Yoakum lists the following children of Isaac (1778) and his wife, Martha Davis:
George b. 1802, m. Jane (unknown).
Aaron b. 1803, m. Lucinda Doak and later Elizabeth Hollingsworth.
John b. 1806, m. Rachel Grimes.
Moses b. 1808, m. Elizabeth Grimes, Rachel's sister.
Isaac b. 1810, arrived in California in 1852. Had two sons hanged for murder.
Alvin b. 1812, m. Elizabeth (unknown).
Marcillus b. 1815, m. (1) Sarah Ann Cawood, (2) Sarah Jane McPherson, (3) Elizh T. Welch.
Jesse James b. 1817, m. Rebecca Branstetter, d. 1854.
Sarah (no info).
Elizabeth, m. Calvin Van Bebber.
William Franklin b. 1819, m. Nancy Poff.
Additional information is given on these families, and especially William Franklin Yoakum's family, in Harold Yoakum's publication cited above. Microfilm of this publication can be ordered through any LDS Family History Center.
