Our Yokum ties are through Jacob Yokum (b: 1802 in
Tennessee), Jacob (b: 1834 in Missouri), and Lucetta (Yokum) Runyon (b:
1862 in Missouri). Lucetta is my great grandmother. Previously published
accounts of Jacob's (1834) descendants (H.C.Smith's Yoakum book) are in
error. Ancestral line most likely leads back through Solomon Yoakum
(1773), Michael Yoakum (1740), and Matthias (ca
1695). Based upon current research, I tend to concur with the view that the early line of Heinrich (1621)--Matthias (1653)--Francis (1678) as portrayed by H. C. Smith is a fictional construct, and that Matthias (b. ca 1695) was the earliest immigrant of this line. See our tentative Yoakum line. Also researching all other Missouri Yoakums and Runyons and their ancestors. Have access to Nebraska State Historical Society library and archives, and have copies of H. C. Smiths Yoakum book, Yoakum (etc.) federal census records from several states, and as many Missouri Yoakum records as I have been able to gather. Glad to do look-ups and exchange info. |

The specific Yoakum line I'm researching has not become
apparent. I have not yet determined the Yoakum line through which my
ggg-grandfather, Jesse P. Yoakum, descends. He was born June 22, 1823
somewhere in Tennessee. He first appears in the Linn Co. Missouri 1850
census records with his brother or first cousin? George Yoakum (b. Feb.
23, 1809 in Tenn.) and George's wife, Sarah. (b. Sept. 12,
1814). My strongest suspect is that my ggg-grandfather, Jesse P. Yoakum, descends through the George Yoakum---Martha Van-Bebber line of Claiborne Co., Tenn. Most likely sons of George and Martha who could be the father of my Jesse P. Yoakum are Peter Yoakum (b. abt 1782) or Valentine(aka Felty) Yoakum (b. abt 1786). I have been trying to locate more information on both Peter and Valentine Yoakum. This all the information I have compiled so far: (more of Brenda's information) If anyone out there would have more information on the families of Peter or Valentine Yoakum (sons of George Yoakum and Martha Van Bebber), please contact me at brendaayoaiz@cctr.umkc.edu |

My information is extremely limited at this time. All I know
is that my ggrandmother Mary Ann Yoakum was born abt 1853 in MO (probably
Ray or Cauldwell Co.) I believe her father was William Yoakum. William was
married twice. Mary Ann had a full brother John. (I think their mother's
maiden name may have been Stone). Sometime in the early 1860's William
moved his family to California. Mary Ann returned to MO after attending
Mills College in California. She married William MacTeer Grimes in 1875 in
MO, probably Ray Co., since William lived near Knoxville, MO in Ray Co.
William and Mary Ann Yoakum Grimes moved to central CA soon after their
marriage. Mary Ann's family lived around Selma (Kings Co and Tulare Co)
She had 3 half sisters, Kate, Florence and Sally, and 2 half brothers Walter and Forest. I look forward to finding some "new" cousins :-)

I am including an outline on the information I
have as I know it at this time. I have so much new and additional
information that I do not feel it feasible to attempt to go into an
extensive update. Maybe a forum allowing the exchange of gedcom files

compare notes with all others none the less, and wish that be
known. I have quite alot of supporting information and am willing to share with anyone writing or e-mailing me. Thanks for the great web page. Joel Thomas Orcutt P.O. My Yokum line is through my great-grandmother,
Fannie Sheffield McGill. Her mother was Mary Ann Yocum, and she was called
Mollie. I believe Mollie (1860-1935) probably to have been the daughter of
Joshua and Mary Yocum of Franklin County, Alabama. I do know that Mollie
grew up in Franklin County. There is a genealogy in the LDS database which includes "my" Joshua, but I believe it to have at least one error. According to my ggrandmother, Mollie's mother's maiden name was Allen, while the LDS database has Mary, wife of Joshua, being a Covington. For those who might be interested, there is a Matthias Yocum, born around 1795 in Kentucky, living in Franklin County up through the 1870 census. Also, a John Yocum was appointed a Captain of the Franklin County (Alabama Territory) Militia in 1818. |

This listing is the best information that I
have on Jacob (James) Yocum of Barry & Taney County, MO. These are the
Yocums of The Yocum Silver Dollar Legend. I believe that Jake, Jacob,
James Yocum was living with the Indians south of Springfield, MO from at
least 9 Jan 1819 until they were moved out to the Kansas City, MO area
about 1838. Henry Rowe Schoolkraft recorded staying in the Yocum cabin on
9 Jan 1819 as he travelled from Potosi, MO to SW, MO then down the White
River into AR and back to Potosi, MO. The Yocum cabin was located at the
mouth of the James River (named after James Yocum) at the White River,
near present day Galena, MO Jacob Yocum was on the 1840 US Census in Barry
Co., MO next door to his son Levi Yocum who is also on the 1840 Barry Co.,

My maiden name is Yocum. My father was born in

I am researching the descendants of the George
YOAKUM that married Martha VAN BEBBER in GREENBRIER County, VA about 1776
and later moved to Powell Valley, Virginia; first in 1786; and then Powell
Valley, Tennessee in 1796. In both locations they built and operated
YOAKUM Station, block houses built for the protection of Frontiersmen
against the Indians.
I would like to secure more information on the descendants of the twelve children of George and Martha. I am off to a good start in documenting the names and spouses of the children, but would like to find out more about those that left the Powell Valley area. George YOAKUM, I., died in Cumberland Mountains near Powell Valley on Oct 28, 1800 in a bear hunt. His widow left Tennessee for Illinois in 1810 and died near Springfield sometime after 1819. Any info to add to this would be appreciated. |

I am looking for the parents of Isaac YOAKUM.
He was living in Bradley Co., TN in the 1840's and 1850's. He moved, with
his family, to MO in 1859-60 and settled in Texas Co., MO.
He and his wife, Rachel, had 11 children: In Bob Derryberry's research he mentions Isaac Rite in the linage of George W. YOAKUM #198. This is the son of Isaac that I am looking for. He is not mentioned anywhere else that I can find. Jesse Franklin YOAKUM son of Isaac and Rachel YOAKUM is my gg-grandfather. Can anyone help me? Thanks Dan McMurray |

I would like to correspond with anyone
researching the Yocum/Yokum/Yoakum surname in Kentucky.
Our ancestor, Rosanna Yokum, married William Higgins Mar. 6, 1800 in Barren Co, KY. According to her daughter's Bible, Rosanna "Mergery" was born Dec 18, 1778. William Maxwell, in his book "Ancestors", states that after Rosanna's mother died, she was raised in her sister's family and adopted their name, Mergery. Rosanna and William had the following children, I descend from Louisianna Higgins and her husband George Harper: Catherine Higgins (1801-1876) & William Bradbury (-1876) |

I am a 4th great-grandson of Mary Yokum,
(daughter of Solomon Yokum) and Samuel Still. Mary Yokum was born in 1793
in North Carolina or Tennessee and her mother was thought to have been a
Cherokee. Mary was the widow of William Black, when she married Samuel
Still abt 1810 in Powells Valley Tennessee. They later moved to the
Delaware Indian Reservation in Missouri, where the James river flows into
the White river in what was to become Stone County.
I also have a web site at http://home.earthlink.net/~smithwil which has some Chariton county Missouri, Yocum census information. |

We have verified proof of our lineage back as far as George Yoakum, 1758-1800, buried in the Felix Rogers cemetery in Speedwell, Tn. Other sources take us back to Heinrich and Gertrude, both born in Germany about 1621, and coming to New Netherlands on The Beaver in May of 1661.Would appreciate any info on them prior to 1661. We couldn't find the port from which they sailed, or from what city. We have Mathias, b. 1653, Francis, b.1678; Valentine, b.1721; George, b.1752; Isaac, b. 1778; Moses, b.1807; George W., b.1842; Moses Edward, (My grandfather) b.1867; Vernon Earl, b. 1900; Roy C.(myself) b.1925; My son Roy Alan, b. 1951; Grandson Richard Alan, b. 1971. |
